If Castlevania: Belmont's Curse will not launch on Steam or Xbox on PC, the documented issue involves V-Sync OFF with FPS set to Unlimited. The official workaround is to temporarily set your Windows monitor refresh rate to below 60Hz, launch the game, turn V-Sync ON, close it, and restore your original refresh rate.
These instructions describe the launch issue documented at release. They are a temporary workaround, and no confirmed patch version resolving the issue is identified here.
Apply the refresh-rate and V-Sync workaround
Record your current refresh rate before changing it so you can restore the same setting afterward.
- In Windows, change the monitor's refresh rate to an available value below 60Hz.
- Launch Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.
- From the title screen, select Settings.
- Open Video Settings and turn V-Sync ON.
- Close the game.
- Restore the monitor's original refresh rate in Windows.
- Launch the game again and check whether it now starts normally.

The official launch-failure notice, not an in-game settings screen.
The temporary Windows change gets you far enough to reach the setting that must remain enabled. Restoring your monitor first, without having turned on V-Sync and closed the game, does not complete the documented sequence.
Below 60Hz is the stated condition
The instruction says below 60Hz, not simply 60Hz. Reports about 60Hz or 120Hz should not be treated as identical to this official procedure. Choose a mode your display actually offers; this page does not recommend creating a custom display mode.
If no refresh rate below 60Hz is available, the stated workaround cannot be followed as written on that display. No equally reliable substitute is established here. Contact customer support with your display model and the available refresh-rate choices instead of assuming a different number has the same effect.
If the game still will not start
If multiple attempts at the documented sequence fail, the official next step is customer support. Include:
- Whether you are using Steam or Xbox on PC.
- Whether you had V-Sync disabled and Unlimited FPS selected.
- The monitor's original rate and the temporary rate you used.
- Whether the game reached the title screen or Settings at any point.
- What happened when you restored the original rate and relaunched.
This makes it clear which step fails. A black screen alone does not establish that every player has exactly the same cause. The procedure is not a general fix for every crash, graphics problem, or unsupported system configuration.
Distinguish the separate title-screen language issue
A second known issue affects some system languages, mainly Arabic. It can prevent progress past the title page after saving and quitting to the title page. Its workaround is to change the system language to a supported language such as English, then continue with the existing save.
That symptom differs from the V-Sync and Unlimited FPS launch failure. Apply the workaround that matches the sequence you actually encountered. The language workaround does not require deleting the save.
Steam Deck display problems are a separate issue
Some UI elements can appear partially off-screen on Steam Deck. A fix was under investigation in the release notice, without a confirmed solution there. Do not assume changing the monitor refresh rate repairs that UI problem, or treat the PC launch workaround as a Steam Deck layout fix.
When the game opens, Gameplay Guide explains its systems and Launch Review Roundup summarizes the available launch impressions.
